County Senior Football Championship

We made our re appearance at senior level on Good Friday when we faced Ballylanders in the first round of the senior championship. With scores limited to a premium we managed both sides could not be separated at full on nine points apiece. This was a very good result if not a little disappointing as there was plenty more within this team and although it was not a defeat we can feel somewhat annoyed that we did not perform to our ability.

In saying this much credit must to be given to this team who went in at the break two points down and kept Bally to only two points in the second half despite been reduced to fourteen players for the last twelve minutes of the game. We started strongly with some great work from Seamus McSweeney and Richard Hayes however our shooting boots were left in st senans as we put some sloppy wides. At the other end Ballylanders punished out somewhat overzealous tackling and showed us the fine margins of senior football. Stephen O Connell got us on the score board with a fine score from midfield off the left while Darragh Woulfe playing minor last year and his first senior game this year scored an excellent score from just inside the side line.

At times simple errors and basics cost us but we battled hard with Maurice Fitzgerald and Anthony Mulvihill leading the charge. In goals the reassurance of Cian Walsh would not have led you to believe that this too was his first senior game for the club and is also part of the minor team.

In the second half we began a lot brighter with some excellent scores from Seamus McSweeney and Ray O Flaherty however again our basic errors and perhaps decision making letting us down. Disaster then struck when we were reduced to 14 men however our lads showed great character and determination perhaps not normally associated with this club to ensure that we held out for a win and even were a little disappointed that we didn’t nick a score near the end.

Overall a positive experience with many players young and old getting used to senior rank with a quick re focus for round 2 vs Monaleen we have no doubt an improved performance against one of the power houses of the club game in Limerick will be required but is more than capable of getting a result. Massive thank you to all those who turned out on the night to supports our lads.
